Target Audience Useful Guide for Practicing Primary Care Physicians, Endocrinologists, and Other Health Care Providers. DOODY'S BOOK REVIEW REVIEWER'S EXPERT OPINION Meltem Zeytinoglu, MD, MBA (University of Chicago Medical Center) Description This book addresses the multiple determinants of care required for managing patients with diabetes. It is a very concise overview of these topics, but does provide appropriate references. Purpose This is intended to serve as a guide to improving diabetes care in the clinic. Given the extent of the diabetes epidemic, this is a worthy goal, but there are many similar publications. Audience The intended audience includes practitioners and diabetes specialists -- both endocrinologists and primary care physicians. The book may be slightly too basic for endocrinologists, however. Features The book begins from an epidemiological perspective, reviewing the burden of diabetes. It then moves into a discussion of the various aspects of diabetes management in the clinic including lifestyle modifications, medical therapy, prevention and treatment of diabetes complications, and healthcare delivery systems to improve diabetes care. Assessment This is a nice, concise overview of diabetes care. It is thorough and covers the multifactorial nature of diabetes care, including epidemiology, pathophysiology, and psychology. However, it may be too concise for endocrinologists and appears to be more geared towards primary care physicians or healthcare providers.
