DOODY'S BOOK REVIEW
REVIEWER'S EXPERT OPINION
Vincent F Carr, DO, MSA, FACC, FACP (Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences)
Description
The book presents many of the concepts a resident must have mastered and have at their fingertips to successfully work in the internal medicine environment.
Purpose
The book presents many of the concepts a resident must have mastered and have at their fingertips to successfully work in the internal medicine environment.
Audience
As the nature of the book implies, this book is intended for clinicians early in their training.
Features
The book begins with an orientation of the rules of call, i.e. what is the new clinician responsible for? This is followed by sections on normal laboratory values, how to write basic clinical orders, and a number of memory aid mnemonics to help beginners. The subsequent sections are divided into the basic organs systems with chapters on specific concepts such as heart murmurs, heart failure optimization, shortness of breath, shock, abdominal pain, seizures, etc. Each chapter has bulleted lists with very specific information, such as ventilator settings or general ventilator orders, that are very direct and to the point and good conservative starting points. There is a bibliography for further reading.
Assessment
This is a very basic tutorial for new clinicians that does a very good job of getting them started. Compared with many of the other house staff manuals on the market, this one is solid but rudimentary. It is a great first step for someone just starting a clinical rotation.
